My Greatest New Year's Wish
My greatest wish for the New Year is for a kinder world. Sure, I long for world peace, an end to hunger worldwide, and so many other noble yet overwhelmingly important things. But I ask myself, "What can make a difference in this very moment?" The answer is kindness.
It's a simple thought. Offer a smile, kind word, pleasant demeanor, helping hand. It isn't really even difficult and it goes a long way to changing your attitude as well as those to whom you offer this wonderful gift.
A couple of months ago my husband dropped me off at the grocery store to pick up a few things while he went to the hardware store. After going through the check-out, I waited outside for him to pick me up. As I stood there, an older gentleman also stood waiting for a ride. I smiled at him and he smiled back. Then he move a bit closer and started to tell me about his wife, how she'd had an accident and was bedridden and in serious pain. He went on to describe his difficult and demanding life. I listened quietly but intently, smiled and held a great deal of compassion for this gentleman who, it seemed, simply needed to talk. When his ride arrived he looked me in the eye and said, "You have made my day and I will never forget you. You are an angel" Needless to say, I have never forgotten him.
Such a simple exchange that meant to much to that man. I was surprised but extremely grateful that I could give this unknown gentleman just what he needed at that moment - a friendly smile and compassionate ear. Such simple and inexpensive gifts.
In this New Year, it is my wish that everyone allow a bit more kindness into their lives. A smile, a "thank-you", a moment to listen to a stranger, a moment to listen to a loved one, holding the door for someone - there are thousands of little things we can do each day that will enhance not only someone else's life, but ours as well.
